IP Australia

Research by IP Australia seeks to add value to Australia’s economic research space by providing insight into the role intellectual property plays in the Australian economy. IP Australia’s stakeholders include government, technology professionals, policy makers, businesses, the public, and more. Communicating their wealth of data effectively was proving problematic.
Standardising data reporting, building a corporate style, developing interactive reports and providing training on effective communications were among the needs to take IP Australia to the next level – and help a broad audience see value in their data.

Data Knowhow's Lisa Cornish was engaged to investigate and develop solutions to support improved data reporting within the organisation – for both internal and external consumption. Lisa liaised with key data users to understand approaches, tools, and challenges.
Tableau was the primary business intelligence tool used within IP Australia but was not being used to its full potential. There was limited internal knowledge and capability.
A data visualisation guide was created to support the organisation in standardising its visualisation. Working with staff, Lisa developed interactive visualisations to demonstrate capability and new approaches that needed to be taken to support wider audience engagement. She created style standards and icon galleries to support users, and developed training to build capability within the organisation. Standardising corporate reporting has also been important, with Lisa supporting HR and finance sections to re-design reporting tools to be more engaging and useful to end-users.
